Nobody knows this little Rose
by Emily Dickinson
Nobody knows this little Rose –
It might a pilgrim be
Did I not take it from the ways
And lift it up to thee.
Only a Bee will miss it –
Only a Butterfly,
Hastening from far journey –
On its breast to lie –
Only a Bird will wonder –
Only a Breeze will sigh –
Ah Little Rose – how easy
For such as thee to die!
Gelijken ’t sterven licht!

The Soul selects her own Society
by Emily Dickinson
The Soul selects her own Society –
Then – shuts the Door –
To her divine Majority –
Present no more –
Unmoved – she notes the Chariots – pausing
At her low Gate –
Unmoved – an Emperor be kneeling
Upon her Mat –
I’ve known her – from an ample nation –
Choose One –
Then – close the Valves of her attention –
Like Stone –
De Ziel kiest zich haar eigen Samenleving –
Sluit dan – de Deur –
Heilige Meerderheid – bestaat er
Voor haar niet meer –
Koel – ziet zij Koetsen – stilstaan – bij haar
Bescheiden Poort –
Koel – zelfs al knielde op haar Deurmat
Een Keizer neer –
Ik weet – zij koos uit talrijk volk soms –
Er Een –
Sloot dan – de Kleppen van haar aandacht –
Als Steen –

There’s a certain Slant of Light
by Emily Dickinson
There’s a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –
Heavenly Hurt, it gives us –
We can find no scar,
But internal difference,
Where the Meanings, are –
None may teach it – Any –
’Tis the Seal Despair –
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air –
When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, ’tis like the Distance
On the look of Death –
Licht dat Schuin naar binnen valt,
Wintermiddagen –
Drukt neer, als de Zwaarte van
Dom met Orgelzang –
’t Geeft Hemelse Pijn, ons –
Sporen laat het niet,
Wel verschil van binnen, waar
De Betekenis, zit –
Niets mag haar – Iets leren –

The murmur of a Bee
by Emily Dickinson
The murmur of a Bee
A Witchcraft – yieldeth me –
If any ask me why –
’Twere easier to die –
Than tell –
The Red upon the Hill
Taketh away my will –
If anybody sneer –
Take care – for God is here –
That’s all.
The Breaking of the Day
Addeth to my Degree –
If any ask me how –
Artist – who drew me so –
Must tell!
’t Gemurmel van een Bij
Loont mij – met Toverij –
Vraagt iemand mij waarom –
Sterven zou lichter zijn –
Mijn mond bleef stom –
Het Rood op Heuvelkam
Is wat mijn wil verlamt –
Als iemand ermee spot –
Hoed u – want hier is God –
Dat is waarom.
De Dag die Opengaat
Verhoogt mij in mijn Staat –
Vraagt iemand hoe – vraag dat
De Kunstenaar – hij had
Mij zo gevormd!

I hav’nt told my garden yet
by Emily Dickinson
I hav’nt told my garden yet –
Lest that should conquer me.
I hav’nt quite the strength now
To break it to the Bee –
I will not name it in the street
For shops w’d stare at me –
That one so shy – so ignorant
Should have the face to die.
The hillsides must not know it –
Where I have rambled so –
Nor tell the loving forests
The day that I shall go –
Nor lisp it at the table –
Nor heedless by the way
Hint that within the Riddle
One will walk today –
Zal wandelen vandaag –

That I did always love
by Emily Dickinson
That I did always love
I bring thee Proof
That till I loved
I never lived – Enough –
That I shall love alway –
I argue thee –
That love is life –
And life hath Immortality –
This – dost thou doubt – Sweet –
Then have I
Nothing to show
But Calvary –
Dat ik steeds liefhad is
Wat ’k je Bewijs
En dat ik tot ik liefhad
Niet Genoeg – levend was –
Dat steeds mijn liefde blijft –
Is nu mijn pleit –
Dat liefde leven is –
En leven heeft Onsterflijkheid –
Geloof je ’t – niet – Lief –
Kan ’k je hierna
Niets laten zien
Dan Golgotha –

If I shouldn’t be alive
by Emily Dickinson
If I shouldn’t be alive
When the Robins come,
Give the one in Red Cravat,
A Memorial crumb –
If I couldn’t thank you,
Being fast asleep,
You will know I’m trying
With my Granite lip
Als ik niet meer leven mocht
En de Roodborst kwam,
Geef die met de Rode Sjaal,
Een Gedachteniskruim –
Kan ik u niet danken,
Is mijn slaap te diep,
Weet dat ik mijn best doe
Met Granieten lip!
